Physician Billing Problem-Correct Place of Service Coding

Audit Reveals High Rate of Place of Service Coding Errors in Medicare Claims

According to the July issue of Texas Medicine (www.texmed.org), a recent audit of Part B claims revealed that in 76 of 100 sampled physician services, place of service (POS) was billed incorrectly to the Medicare carrier (Trailblazer Health Enterprises). In these cases, physicians performed a service in a facility but billed Medicare using the "office" or their nonfacility POS code.

To avoid POS coding errors, according to the article, be sure to identify on your Medicare claims the actual location where your personally performed the services.
