Incorporated solo physician – NPI and the 855B

I recently was asked the following question:

I’ve got a solo physician, incorporated, who has always operated under his own Medicare number.  He applied for an NPI number when he was required to, but now, via the email below, he is being told that he must also apply for an NPI for his corporation.  He never had a group NPI number per his billing supervisor.

It looks like you have to have a group NPI for a corporation even if you are a solo doc in the corporation.  Would they also need to get a group Medicare number via an 855B at this point as well?

The answer is yes and yes. The corporation must apply for its own National Provider Identification Number (NPI) and must also obtain its own Medicare group number (Form 855B)
