Are you using your EMR’s tracking systems?

Most EMR systems include a tracking system to help you make sure your patients have completed your recommended tests or consultant referrals. These systems can minimize a physician's exposure to allegations of a failure to diagnose and can lead to better patient care. Most EMR tracking systems can do the following:

- Verify that the patient keeps the appointment or completes the test;

- Confirm receipt of a clinical report;

- Prompt a call to the consulting physician, imaging center, or lab if a report is not received;

- Make sure the physician reviews the report;

- Communicate results to the patient;

- Arrange for follow up if needed; and

- Document all of these steps with dates and electronic signatures.

In other words, implementing and using your EMR's tracking systems is good risk management.
